United States: President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he will not be seeking reelection in the upcoming elections after the Democratic Party leaders sounded the alarm that his chance of securing a win against former President Donald Trump in the November polls was virtually impossible.
More about the news
The president’s historic decision turns the 2024 campaign – which has already been disrupted by a shocking assassination attempt on Trump into uncertainty, and Vice President Kamala Harris is considered by most Democrats most likely to replace Biden in the party’s ticket.
Biden announced this from his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he has been isolated for the last few days after contracting COVID-19 Thursday night, as USA Today reported.

In a separate statement on social media platform X, Biden quickly endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee.
In response, Harris expressed her honor to receive Biden’s endorsement and said that her “intention is to earn and win this nomination.”
Moreover, when addressing Americans, Biden said, “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” and, “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to stand down and to focus solely on my duties as President for the rest of my term.”
The move upends the 2024 campaign 107 days before election day. The Democratic National Committee members are now left to decide on another candidate to face Trump, who is becoming vibrant again as his poll numbers improve, while Democrats struggle within themselves.
About Biden’s political career
Biden’s exit would shortly bring an end to the 50 years of his political journey in Washington, which started in 1972 with a historic win for the US Senate in Delaware.
He was a senator for Thirty-Six years before becoming a vice president during Obama’s tenure, as USA Today reported.
Biden returned to the news to challenge Trump for the presidency of the United States in 2020. Joe Biden committed to framing the race as a “battle for the soul of the nation” and defeated Donald Trump by the popular vote.
It has been an extraordinary transformation for Biden, who was unyielding for 21 days to be pressured by Democratic legislators to step down after a bad June 27 debate against Trump increased questions about the mental health of the president.
